Treatment of generalized cancer, malnutrition, long-term antibiotic therapy, and other systemic diseases may require central venous access. Such a port-a-cath is implanted during a short inpatient stay.

How long can a port-a-cath remain implanted?
As long as the port-a-cath does not cause any problems (local discomfort, infections) and is potentially still being used, it can remain in the body; there is no maximum “durability”.
